President Ronald Reagan.

From Forbes on Reagan raising taxes to increase revenue:

“Everyone remembers Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts. His admirers are less likely to tout the tax hikes he accepted as the 1981 recession and his own tax cuts began to unravel his long-term fiscal picture–a large tax increase on business in 1982, higher payroll taxes enacted in 1983 and higher energy taxes in 1984. A decade later, when a serious recession and higher spending began to upend the fiscal outlook again, the first President Bush similarly raised taxes on higher-income people in 1991; Bill Clinton doubled down and raised them again in 1993.”

President Reagan on raising the debt ceiling:

“This country now possesses the strongest credit in the world. The full consequence of a default–or even the serious prospect of default–by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate….The risks, the costs, the disruptions, and the incalculable damage lead me to but one conclusion: the Senate must pass this legislation before the Congress adjourns.” -Ronald Reagan

President Reagan and the Iran Arms and Contra Aid Controversy:

“For the past 3 months, I’ve been silent on the revelations about Iran. And you must have been thinking: “Well, why doesn’t he tell us what’s happening? Why doesn’t he just speak to us as he has in the past when we’ve faced troubles or tragedies?” Others of you, I guess, were thinking: “What’s he doing hiding out in the White House?” Well, the reason I haven’t spoken to you before now is this: You deserve the truth. And as frustrating as the waiting has been, I felt it was improper to come to you with sketchy reports, or possibly even erroneous statements, which would then have to be corrected, creating even more doubt and confusion. There’s been enough of that.

I’ve paid a price for my silence in terms of your trust and confidence. But I’ve had to wait, as you have, for the complete story. That’s why I appointed Ambassador David Abshire as my special counselor to help get out the thousands of documents to the various investigations. And I appointed a special review board, the Tower board, which took on the chore of pulling the truth together for me and getting to the bottom of things. It has now issued its findings.”…

… “Let’s start with the part that is the most controversial. A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that’s true, but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not. As the Tower board reported, what began as a strategic opening to Iran deteriorated, in its implementation, into trading arms for hostages. This runs counter to my own beliefs, to administration policy, and to the original strategy we had in mind. There are reasons why it happened, but no excuses. It was a mistake.” -Ronald Reagan

Not to mention Reagan’s funding of the mujahideen through financing and arms to fight Soviet Russia. “After several years of devastating fighting, a village mullah named Mohammed Omar organized a new armed movement with the backing of Pakistan. This movement became known as the Taliban

President Reagan on Immigration and Amnesty:

“I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally.” -Ronald Reagan

- Large employers (over 50 workers) that don’t offer health benefits will be charged a $2,000/worker fee; if the employer offers coverage but employees instead purchase federally subsidized insurance the fee is $3,000/worker receiving federal subsidies or $750/worker (whichever is lower)

- Annual fees on pharmaceutical companies ($27 billion), health insurance companies ($60 billion), and medical device-makers ($20 billion)

- Annual penalties on individuals who do not have health insurance (up to a maximum of $695/person)

- Increase in the Medicare payroll tax from 1.45% to 2.35% for individuals making $200,000+ and families making $250,000+

- 3.8% tax on unearned income for millionaires

- Insurance companies will be subject to a tax on each high-end insurance plan (so-called “Cadillac” plans) they offer

Miscellaneous:

- Illegal immigrants are not eligible for insurance or subsidies

- By Executive Order, such federal funding can’t be used for abortion

- The federal government will assist states by covering all of the increased expenses of expanding Medicaid coverage (90% of costs after 2020)

As Pertinent Now As It Was Then: FDR’s Second Inaugural Address

Posted: 20th June 2011 by Opinionated Democrat in Politics

When I look at the current state of our nation, I see repetitive behaviors to a time not so long ago. Please take the time to read President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Second Inaugural Address, and may we learn from it again.

FDR’s Second Inaugural Address Audio

“My fellow countrymen. When four years ago we met to inaugurate a President, the Republic, single-minded in anxiety, stood in spirit here. We dedicated ourselves to the fulfillment of a vision—to speed the time when there would be for all the people that security and peace essential to the pursuit of happiness. We of the Republic pledged ourselves to drive from the temple of our ancient faith those who had profaned it; to end by action, tireless and unafraid, the stagnation and despair of that day. We did those first things first.

Our covenant with ourselves did not stop there. Instinctively we recognized a deeper need—the need to find through government the instrument of our united purpose to solve for the individual the ever-rising problems of a complex civilization. Repeated attempts at their solution without the aid of government had left us baffled and bewildered. For, without that aid, we had been unable to create those moral controls over the services of science which are necessary to make science a useful servant instead of a ruthless master of mankind. To do this we knew that we must find practical controls over blind economic forces and blindly selfish men.

We of the Republic sensed the truth that democratic government has innate capacity to protect its people against disasters once considered inevitable, to solve problems once considered unsolvable. We would not admit that we could not find a way to master economic epidemics just as, after centuries of fatalistic suffering, we had found a way to master epidemics of disease. We refused to leave the problems of our common welfare to be solved by the winds of chance and the hurricanes of disaster.

In this we Americans were discovering no wholly new truth; we were writing a new chapter in our book of self-government.

This year marks the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Constitutional Convention which made us a nation. At that Convention our forefathers found the way out of the chaos which followed the Revolutionary War; they created a strong government with powers of united action sufficient then and now to solve problems utterly beyond individual or local solution. A century and a half ago they established the Federal Government in order to promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to the American people.

Today we invoke those same powers of government to achieve the same objectives.

Four years of new experience have not belied our historic instinct. They hold out the clear hope that government within communities, government within the separate States, and government of the United States can do the things the times require, without yielding its democracy. Our tasks in the last four years did not force democracy to take a holiday.

Nearly all of us recognize that as intricacies of human relationships increase, so power to govern them also must increase—power to stop evil; power to do good. The essential democracy of our nation and the safety of our people depend not upon the absence of power, but upon lodging it with those whom the people can change or continue at stated intervals through an honest and free system of elections. The Constitution of 1787 did not make our democracy impotent.

In fact, in these last four years, we have made the exercise of all power more democratic; for we have begun to bring private autocratic powers into their proper subordination to the public’s government. The legend that they were invincible—above and beyond the processes of a democracy—has been shattered. They have been challenged and beaten.

Our progress out of the depression is obvious. But that is not all that you and I mean by the new order of things. Our pledge was not merely to do a patchwork job with secondhand materials. By using the new materials of social justice we have undertaken to erect on the old foundations a more enduring structure for the better use of future generations.

In that purpose we have been helped by achievements of mind and spirit. Old truths have been relearned; untruths have been unlearned. We have always known that heedless self-interest was bad morals; we know now that it is bad economics. Out of the collapse of a prosperity whose builders boasted their practicality has come the conviction that in the long run economic morality pays. We are beginning to wipe out the line that divides the practical from the ideal; and in so doing we are fashioning an instrument of unimagined power for the establishment of a morally better world.

This new understanding undermines the old admiration of worldly success as such. We are beginning to abandon our tolerance of the abuse of power by those who betray for profit the elementary decencies of life.

In this process evil things formerly accepted will not be so easily condoned. Hard-headedness will not so easily excuse hardheartedness. We are moving toward an era of good feeling. But we realize that there can be no era of good feeling save among men of good will.

For these reasons I am justified in believing that the greatest change we have witnessed has been the change in the moral climate of America.

Among men of good will, science and democracy together offer an ever-richer life and ever-larger satisfaction to the individual. With this change in our moral climate and our rediscovered ability to improve our economic order, we have set our feet upon the road of enduring progress.

Shall we pause now and turn our back upon the road that lies ahead? Shall we call this the promised land? Or, shall we continue on our way? For “each age is a dream that is dying, or one that is coming to birth.”

Many voices are heard as we face a great decision. Comfort says, “Tarry a while.” Opportunism says, “This is a good spot.” Timidity asks, “How difficult is the road ahead?”

True, we have come far from the days of stagnation and despair. Vitality has been preserved. Courage and confidence have been restored. Mental and moral horizons have been extended.

But our present gains were won under the pressure of more than ordinary circumstances. Advance became imperative under the goad of fear and suffering. The times were on the side of progress.

To hold to progress today, however, is more difficult. Dulled conscience, irresponsibility, and ruthless self-interest already reappear. Such symptoms of prosperity may become portents of disaster! Prosperity already tests the persistence of our progressive purpose.

Let us ask again: Have we reached the goal of our vision of that fourth day of March 1933? Have we found our happy valley?

I see a great nation, upon a great continent, blessed with a great wealth of natural resources. Its hundred and thirty million people are at peace among themselves; they are making their country a good neighbor among the nations. I see a United States which can demonstrate that, under democratic methods of government, national wealth can be translated into a spreading volume of human comforts hitherto unknown, and the lowest standard of living can be raised far above the level of mere subsistence.

But here is the challenge to our democracy: In this nation I see tens of millions of its citizens—a substantial part of its whole population—who at this very moment are denied the greater part of what the very lowest standards of today call the necessities of life.

I see millions of families trying to live on incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hangs over them day by day.

I see millions whose daily lives in city and on farm continue under conditions labeled indecent by a so-called polite society half a century ago.

I see millions denied education, recreation, and the opportunity to better their lot and the lot of their children.

I see millions lacking the means to buy the products of farm and factory and by their poverty denying work and productiveness to many other millions.

I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished.

But it is not in despair that I paint you that picture. I paint it for you in hope—because the nation, seeing and understanding the injustice in it, proposes to paint it out. We are determined to make every American citizen the subject of his country’s interest and concern; and we will never regard any faithful law-abiding group within our borders as superfluous. The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.

If I know aught of the spirit and purpose of our Nation, we will not listen to comfort, opportunism, and timidity. We will carry on.

Overwhelmingly, we of the Republic are men and women of good will; men and women who have more than warm hearts of dedication; men and women who have cool heads and willing hands of practical purpose as well. They will insist that every agency of popular government use effective instruments to carry out their will.

Government is competent when all who compose it work as trustees for the whole people. It can make constant progress when it keeps abreast of all the facts. It can obtain justified support and legitimate criticism when the people receive true information of all that government does.

If I know aught of the will of our people, they will demand that these conditions of effective government shall be created and maintained. They will demand a nation uncorrupted by cancers of injustice and, therefore, strong among the nations in its example of the will to peace.

Today we reconsecrate our country to long-cherished ideals in a suddenly changed civilization. In every land there are always at work forces that drive men apart and forces that draw men together. In our personal ambitions we are individualists. But in our seeking for economic and political progress as a nation, we all go up, or else we all go down, as one people.

To maintain a democracy of effort requires a vast amount of patience in dealing with differing methods, a vast amount of humility. But out of the confusion of many voices rises an understanding of dominant public need. Then political leadership can voice common ideals, and aid in their realization.

In taking again the oath of office as President of the United States, I assume the solemn obligation of leading the American people forward along the road over which they have chosen to advance.

While this duty rests upon me I shall do my utmost to speak their purpose and to do their will, seeking Divine guidance to help us each and every one to give light to them that sit in darkness and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Actually, Jesus Told Me You’re Wrong

Posted: 18th June 2011 by Opinionated Democrat in Politics

While I am a proponent of keeping Church and State separate as defined in the US Constitution and later clarified by Thomas Jefferson, I need to let these supposed Bible thumping Conservatives know that they are wrong. If they’re going to bring religion into their campaign, I’m going to clarify their message. I don’t know who is talking to Michele Bachmann and Mike Huckabee, but it most certainly cannot be the Jesus that is in the Bible. Jesus wasn’t a jerk and a bigot…they are. Jesus cared for the poor, the sick, the homeless, and those less fortunate… they couldn’t care less. One of the biggest sins in the Bible is to use the Lords name in vain… they do so on a daily basis by incorrectly interpreting the Bible to suit their personal needs. Now, if they only speak of the Old Testament in the Bible, their hatred could be justified. However, if that were the case, the Bible would condemn all of them as much as those they condemn themselves. With that being the case the Old Testament cannot be used. If they are going to speak of the New Testament, which includes the story of Jesus and his apostles, I would have to say it looks as though Jesus would deem them wrong. Now this is a fact…. The Bible tells me so.

In the Bible Jesus tells us his two most important commandments: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Jesus actually tells people after first and foremost loving God, to love your neighbor. Not to love yourself and then if you have time love your neighbor, but to love your neighbor as though they were yourself. On the topics of racism and homophobia… it is not their job to cast judgement. According to their Bible that is the job of their Lord. According to their Holy book, it is their job to love their neighbor as themselves… end of story…. and they love themselves… a lot. On the topics of unemployment, poverty, and health care, it would seem that if they think that they should have all the care they need, shouldn’t their neighbors (according to the Bible) have the care that they need. Oh, but they can’t afford it… well according to Jesus if you don’t figure out a way to get them care, you will not dwell in the house of the Lord forever. In Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus tells his followers, “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

You see… the message that Jesus speaks of in the Bible is not to ignore the less fortunate, but to embrace them and make sure that they are cared for. In a country as big as ours we have the ability to do this. We do not however have the ability to do this if we only focus on profit, and private business. We as a nation need to come together and care for our nations citizens. We are far bigger than any one “voluntary” charity could support. We have taxes for a reason, and asking people to be voluntary is a moot point.

Jesus also states, “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” and “if you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.”

It seems that Jesus was not a profit driven Crony Capitalist that only cared about the bottom line and himself… however, that is the majority of today’s Republican Party.

If certain Conservatives truly want to say that they are Christian, then they will be strong advocates for social programs, because that’s what Jesus would have wanted. The tool that we have in this nation is the ability to have a national tax system that was set up by our forefathers to take care of the general welfare of our citizens. By putting profit before people, not only are they defying the very principles set forth by the founders of this nation, but they are also defying the principles set forth by the Christian values they claim to have. They say that they want a “Christian” nation. Well, we are not, we never were, and we never will be. We are not a Theocracy. We have freedom of religion (any religion or none at all), and as written in the Constitution, we do not recognize any one religion as the rule of law.

Basically, if you are going to say you are Christian, and that Jesus talks to you and tells you what decisions to make… maybe follow his teachings. Otherwise, I don’t know who you are listening too, but according to the way that you say that you believe, whoever is talking to you is probably transmitting their message from a very warm climate.

To be blunt and Constitutional, leave religion out of politics, and if you are a judgmental bigot and hate the poor, don’t do so in the name of Jesus Christ.

I’m challenging the other Sarah to a debate. She has dragged down the good name of Sarah long enough, and I’m fighting to regain the dignity it once held.

Dear Sarah Palin,

I invite you to a debate where we may discuss the everyday issues that effect this great nation. Issues such as the economy, education, public vs. private, Planned Parenthood, foreign affairs, gay rights, etc. This is not a political debate, per se. I just want to speak with you one on one, televised or not, and discuss our opinions. That’s all. You seem to have a lot of opinions on every issue, as do I. What do you think? Do you accept my invitation?

Sincerely,

Sarah Wood (Opinionated Democrat)

I may not have the clout that Sarah Palin holds within the political arena, but I definitely know that I have the ability to properly answer a question, offer my opinion, and back it up with fact. Like her, I come from a middle class family and consider myself “one of the people”. I also come from a religious background, and will be able to debate her in that arena as well if she so chooses. If she is in fact, one of the people she will accept my offer. Now we wait for the response.

If the answer is yes, Sarah you or “your people” can reach me on Twitter @OpinionatedDem

A Party Comparison: What’s In Your Best Interest? Choose Wisely

Posted: 18th May 2011 by Opinionated Democrat in Politics

With all this hullabaloo going on about which party does what… I’d like to offer you my opinion, backed with common sense, and very noticeable to the naked eye fact. You can assume it will be biased, that is also common sense… but you will soon see why. I know we are more than a two-party country, but thinking realistically as to who predominately wins elections, I’m going to stick to the Republican and Democratic Parties.

I will start with the elephant in the room… the Republicans.

What do Republicans believe in:

  • They prefer State Rights and Laws over Federal Law.. they feel that States should be able to fend for themselves. (Even though it’s pretty certain that there once was a war over this same issue… it was Civil though, and the North was full of “Aggression”.. it seems it cut into profit to treat humans like humans)
  • They prefer little to no taxation, and reliance upon the individual. (This may also include, but is not limited to, paving and painting their own roads, responding to their own emergencies, fighting foreign invaders, and delivering their own mail)
  • They feel that the solution to gun violence is more guns being allowed in more places. (..because this is working out great for the middle east, and parts of Africa. I’ve always wanted to form a well-regulated militia whilst dusting off my tri-cornered hat and musket. Like I’ve always said, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people… with guns” .. We need more “well-regulated” gun laws, not less)
  • Some Republicans want to cut federal regulation of air, water, food, pharmaceuticals, airlines, as well as building codes. (because who needs to be healthy and safe anyways?)
  • They want the individual to pay for their own health care, because they think being healthy is a privilege and not a right. (Even though if we had Universal Care we would still be paying for ourselves, it would cost less, and everyone would be covered for every ailment without question or hesitation… Doctors should be paid for quality of care and healthy patients, instead of procedure, and the number of unhealthy patients…. but that just makes too much sense.. I know)
  • Most Republicans seem to think it’s okay to discriminate in regards to pay and employment based upon gender. (Instead of performance… I guess women leave to take care of their families… because the men don’t?)
  • Some Republicans want to eliminate a minimum wage, employee bargaining rights, as well as other benefits. (… because being a good employer is too expensive when it cuts into profit…. ever heard of investing in human capital?? You’d see a better outcome overall)
  • Many Republicans think that it’s okay to take public tax payer dollars away from public schools and give them to private and religious schools. (As long as the money goes to private industry and not back to the tax payer… it’s all good… so sayeth the Republicans)
  • They think that the nation will be better off if we continue to give billion dollar handouts (subsidies) to record profit-making oil companies that don’t pay any taxes, instead of to the actual tax paying citizens that deserve to see services from their money.
  • Some Republicans think that FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should be cut, and or abolished all together (Ron Paul).  (Those that vote Republican, seem to hate the government, until they desperately need it due to natural disaster… while the Republicans say… “too bad… fend for yourselves”… Yet many continue to vote for them. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.)
  • Some Republicans will tell you that they think the ‘Civil Rights Act’ was bad, and that it takes away from personal freedom. (Yes, the personal freedom to be a racist and a bigot, and not see consequence for such abhorrent, juvenile behavior)
  • Republicans think that it is okay to openly discriminate against LGBT individuals. (Based upon their religious beliefs, which is in direct violation of the Constitution barring the involvement of Church in legislative matters that effect everyone. Not everyone has the same beliefs… and we are not a Theocracy)
  • Some Republicans also think that it’s okay to restrict citizens from voting by any means necessary. (Apparently, they can’t win by legitimate means)

Now onto the Party that I feel if you vote for them… “The ass you save, may be your own”

What do Democrats believe in:

  • They prefer State rights and legislation for local issues, and federal law for human rights, as well as other issues that pertain to the nation as a whole. (Democrats believe in a Nation of, by, and for the people… every person, not just oneself.)
  • They prefer a tax that will be suitable to the current time and situation, and reliance upon the nations citizens to understand when we are in multiple wars that are not paid for, as well as a terrible economic climate where more people due to poor policy, are out of work and need assistance. (Assist those that need it, not those that don’t. Democrats believe in a Nation of, by, and for the people.)
  • They believe in “well-regulated” gun use. (This is not the wild wild west, nor a video game… “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people… with guns.”)
  • Democrats believe that it is the job of our elected legislation (elected by and for the people) to make sure that we maintain proper and safe conditions for the quality of air, water, food, and drugs… as well as making sure that airline and building safety is safe and up to code.
  • Many, if not most Democrats believe that health care is a right, and not a privilege. They believe that we should have a national system set up to ensure everyone has the ability to be properly cared for. (“Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”… Without life, we can have no liberty to pursue happiness. Without health we are not alive… that is common sense.)
  • They believe that there should be no discrimination based upon gender or race in the workplace or when applying to a school.
  • Democrats understand “human capital”. (Human Capital: “The attributes of a person that are productive in some economic context. Often refers to formal educational attainment, with the implication that education is an investment whose returns are in the form of wage, salary, or other compensation. These are normally measured and conceived of as private returns to the individual but can also be social returns.”) (Invest in people, and you will invest in the company, and/or the nation.)
  • Democrats understand the importance of everyone having the ability to achieve a high quality education, and firmly believe in the investment into public schools… this goes back to “human capital”… we will later see a return on this investment.
  • Democrats believe that we should be investing in people and not giving hand-outs to big corporations, and big oil. (Wealth doesn’t trickle down… pee does.)
  • They believe in the importance of a national disaster relief service such as FEMA. We are after all a nation of, by, and for the people (not corporations)… we help our people when it need, that’s what makes us great.
  • Democrats believe in equality for all, where all men and women are created equally, and have the equal right to pursue their own individual version of happiness, albeit law-abiding. (This includes eliminating the red tape for immigration, treating all minorities as decent human beings that have the same right to be in this nation as anyone else, and recognizing that LGBT individuals are just people in love with other people, which has nothing to do with anything else. They should be given the same rights and privileges as everyone else… It’s not about some “losing freedom”, it’s about others gaining freedom and catching up.)
  • Democrats believe in fair and just voting practices that do not eliminate someones right to vote based upon trivial matters.

These are my opinions… take them as such, but also take them to heart when deciding who to vote for.

Who Do Fox “News” Viewers Want To Torture? (VIDEO)

Posted: 5th May 2011 by Opinionated Democrat in Politics

Who do Fox “News” viewers want to torture (aka Waterboard)?

Please watch this video clip, and you will soon see how blood thirsty, psychotic, and terrifying some people in this nation are. Quick fact to them, waterboarding did not provide the information that led to the discovery of Osama Bin Laden. That information came far later through legal interrogation, and other means of gathering intelligence. Waterboarding is illegal… as are other forms of torture. That’s why former President Bush can’t visit certain countries… they will arrest him. As we should.

Some names of those that Fox “News” viewers want to see tortured are: “President Obama, Senate Democrats, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, ‘my ex-wife’ (classy right?), and Joy Behar”

When did people start thinking that life is a video game? When did people start to think that crimes against humanity are justified? When do we stop being the good guy and become the bad guy? Thankfully we now have President Obama, who has clarified that we are now indeed standing on the correct side of the law.

The name of this article should read… “Which Fox “News” viewers should we arrest for potential endangerment to our nations citizens?”

A Letter To Glenn Beck Regarding Reckless Endangerment (VIDEO)

Posted: 25th April 2011 by Opinionated Democrat in Politics

Dear Glenn Beck,

It is illegal to shout “FIRE!” for no reason in a crowded theater because of the harm that it could cause to others. You can and should be charged with Reckless Endangerment for the causation of such acts, even if you yourself did not commit the harm being done.

Recently on your show you said that there is a plot by President Obama to create an Octavian Empire, and it is based on a willingness to kill “25 Million Americans.”

Mr. Beck, your words are dangerous with no intelligent reasoning to back them up. You are quite literally making up information by skewing things together in a fashion that can only be thought of as Sociopathic. Where you have absolutely no remorse for the actions that might take place from your words.

Do you think your words will not come without consequence? Do you think that by telling millions of viewers and listeners complete and utter fallacies, such as Obama and his “Empire” want to kill “25 Million Americans” that there will be no action in response to those terrifying words? You are not pulling the trigger but you are loading the ammunition to a terrible outcome.

People will want to defend themselves from their impending doom. They will look at anyone in opposition as a potential threat to their life and will think that they are protecting themselves and others in self-defense.

The blood will be on your hands Mr. Beck. You have shouted “FIRE” in an extraordinarily crowded theater, in a very volatile environment.

I ask of your apologies, and for you to denounce yourself and all you have said for the harmful lies that they and you are. You are an embarrassment to the United States of America, any party you are affiliated with, and the God you claim to worship. Shame on you.

Sincerely,

Those that you are Demonizing

Shutting ‘Birthers’ Up For Good

Posted: 11th April 2011 by Opinionated Democrat in Politics

It goes without saying that there is a general bout of racism going on in our nation. However, never in my life, nor the lives of my parents and/or grandparents has their been such disdain for the President of the United States. Largely in part to the feeling that our President was not born in one of the 50 states that make up the great nation of the United States of America. To that I say… it doesn’t matter.

Was President Barack Hussein Obama II born in Hawaii? Yes. Is there proof of this? Yes. However, with that being said, it is apparently not a good enough explanation for having a black President. Instead, where do the ‘Birthers’ (those that believe President Obama was born outside of the U.S.A.) believe the President was born? Africa… of course.

It is true that President Obama’s father was Kenyan. It is true that he has visited Kenya. It is true that he had lived outside of the U.S. in Indonesia during part of his childhood. However, even if the ‘Birthers’ do not want to believe that President Obama was born in Hawaii (which he was), that still does not make him ineligible to become President. You see, President Obama’s mother was a United States citizen her entire life, and no matter where she gave birth to him, he would still be eligible to become President of the United States of America.

Many military families from the U.S. have had children overseas, those children would also be U.S. citizens. Former Presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, but there was no question as to his citizenship during his campaign, and if there was, it was quickly dismissed. He was born to American citizens. As was President Barack Hussein Obama II.

For those that want to question this, I advise them to look at the law books.

United States Code: Title 8,1401. Nationals and citizens of United States at Birth (please note Section [g])

This code was written prior to the birth of President Obama.

Even though President Obama was unquestionably born in Hawaii, USA on August 4, 1961, this should put an end to any question with one simple phrase… It doesn’t matter either way.

He’s black, get over it.

Yesterday, my boss found out that one of our factory workers left for maternity leave. In front of several other workers and the factory supervisor, she said, “Let her take maternity leave but as soon she gets back we have to let her go. She’s going to have a kid and she’s going to have to take a lot of days off and I don’t what to deal with it.” After she left, everyone was talking about it, and everyone was a little disturbed. The pregnant employee is one of our best workers, and we have one other pregnant worker expecting a child within the month. The factory supervisor herself has been trying to get pregnant too, and has already felt discouraged by my boss’s general attitude, but this most recent comment was upsetting to her. A few of the other managers looked into the laws regarding this kind of firing, and found that because this company is small and privately held, my boss could most likely get away with something like that. The atmosphere of the entire place was tense and subdued. One of the other managers who is generally in charge of HR duties said he would do some more research into the legality of it and figure out how to fight it.

Obviously, there is something wrong with firing someone for getting pregnant and having a child, even if you can do it legally. But it felt like something deeper than that was bothering me. I was furious, even though it was not my job being threatened. I put myself in that employee’s shoes and realized that if that ever happened to me, I would want someone to stand up for me, not only by trying to prove what’s lawful and what’s not, but by reminding everyone involved what is right and what is wrong.

Later, the president of the company (my boss’s boss), was dropping a few things off. I asked him into my office and closed the door. I told him what had happened earlier and what my boss had said. I told him it bothered everyone, and people were pretty upset. I am a particularly valued employee at this company because I guess good scientists in my particular field are hard to find and I generally do a good job, so I thought I would at least try to throw my weight around with him as he is pretty much the only one with the authority to reverse my boss’s decision. I told him, “Our employees should not be afraid to have children and start families, because that’s real life, and this work is just something we do to make our real lives happen. We should not be afraid of losing our jobs. If that’s how it’s going to be here, this is not the kind of place I want to work.” He was listening, and he understood what I was getting at. “The other thing,” I said, “is that, as a manager and scientist here, if I were to get pregnant and take maternity leave, the company would be much more lenient with me than they are with our factory workers. But they make this company run just as much, if not more, than I do, and we should treat them that way. The things [the boss] said and her attitude about this are unacceptable to me. I just wanted to let you know, and I hope you understand where I’m coming from.” I think this made an impression on him. He is, like most people, fair and compassionate, and as he left my office he seemed just as upset as I was by what was going on in his company. He thanked me for letting him know, and said he would take care of it.

And he did. That employee will have a job to come back to, and she will be given the same chance to do good work regardless of the fact that she has a young child and is starting a family. My boss apologized for her words, and everyone was reassured that no one will ever be fired for getting pregnant, and no one should feel discouraged from having children.

It’s a tiny thing I did, but a new mother can count on a paycheck when her maternity leave ends. This might have come about without my speaking out and trying to stand up for this employee, but it also might not have. No one else at my company was going to make a fuss about it. How often do things like this happen and no one puts themselves out there to stop it?

I guess this wouldn’t even seem like a big deal to some people; after all, it’s just one employee at one small company out of thousands in my state. But if we aren’t willing to stand up for each other over the small things, to be ready to leverage our own comfort and position in order to make a moral statement or even just to make firing a pregnant employee that much more difficult, then how can we expect to right all the big injustices that our politics and legislation can’t seem to fix? That stuff is not enough. We have to make all the little battles matter, and if we do, they will add up. Oppression is a big idea, but the practice of it is hidden in the details of our daily lives and in the attitudes of those who think they have power. You can fight oppression with compassion and love, which means understanding we are all responsible for each other and standing up for someone else just like you’d stand up for yourself.
